Ways to Use the Greek Gods Wheel

Mythology knowledge is surprisingly useful across a lot of different contexts.

🧠
Mythology Trivia
Spin to pick the god each trivia round focuses on. Questions cover domains, Roman name, relationships, famous myths, animals associated with the deity, and which modern media has featured them. Works great for history classes and pub quizzes.
✍️
Creative Writing Prompts
Spin twice — once for a god, once for a setting. Write a story where that deity is operating in that modern context. Hermes as a delivery driver. Hephaestus as an automotive engineer. Hades running a hospice. Surprisingly productive prompts.
🎮
Game Character Naming
Spin to pick a deity name (or domain) for a game character, DnD deity for a homebrew campaign, villain name, spaceship name, or any project that benefits from mythological naming. Greek mythology names read instantly as ancient and weighty.
📚
Study Aid
Spin to get a random deity, then test yourself on their domain, Roman name, three associated myths, and relationships to other Olympians without checking. Works as a self-quiz for mythology courses or Percy Jackson fans going deep.
🎨
Art Projects
Spin to pick a deity to illustrate. Research historical depictions in ancient pottery, Renaissance painting, and modern art. Draw or paint your own interpretation. Each deity has strong visual iconography — owl for Athena, lightning bolt for Zeus, etc.
👶
Kids' Mythology Class
Spin to assign each student a deity to research and present. They learn the name, domain, famous myth, and Roman equivalent. Presenting to the class works better than reading from a textbook and creates natural discussion about who controls what.

The Major Titans: Before the Olympians

The Titans were the generation of divine beings who ruled before the Olympians. Kronos (the leader of the Titans) swallowed his children to prevent a prophecy. Zeus survived, freed his siblings, and led the Olympians in the Titanomachy war. The Titans were imprisoned in Tartarus after their defeat, except for those who sided with the Olympians.

Kronos (Cronus)
Time, Harvest

Leader of the Titans. Father of Zeus, Hera, Poseidon, Demeter, Hades, and Hestia. Swallowed each child at birth until Zeus escaped. Often confused with Chronos (a separate deity of time) in popular culture.

Prometheus
Forethought, Fire

Stole fire from the gods and gave it to humanity. Punished by Zeus with eternal torment: chained to a rock, eagle eats his liver daily, it grows back overnight. Symbol of sacrifice for human progress. His name literally means "forethought."

Atlas
Endurance, Astronomy

Condemned to hold up the sky (not the Earth, as commonly depicted) for eternity as punishment for leading the Titans in the Titanomachy. Appears in the myth of Perseus and Heracles. The Atlas Mountains and the Atlantic Ocean are named after him.

Hyperion
Light, Sun

Titan of heavenly light and father of Helios (the sun), Selene (the moon), and Eos (dawn). The name means "the high one" or "he who goes above." One of the four Titan brothers who helped Kronos overpower Uranus.

Oceanus
World Ocean

The Titan who personified the world river that the Greeks believed surrounded the Earth. One of the few Titans who did not fight against the Olympians. Father of the Oceanids (3,000 water nymphs) and 3,000 river gods.

Themis
Law, Justice, Order

Titan of divine law, order, and custom. One of the Titans who sided with the Olympians. Became an oracle at Delphi before Apollo took over the site. Represented with the scales of justice, the image still used in modern law iconography.

Greek Gods Wheel FAQ

Which Greek gods are on this wheel?
The wheel has 24 figures across three groups. The Twelve Olympians: Zeus, Hera, Poseidon, Demeter, Athena, Apollo, Artemis, Ares, Aphrodite, Hephaestus, Hermes, Dionysus. The Underworld and Beyond: Hades, Persephone, Eros, Hestia, Hypnos, Thanatos. Heroes and Titans: Hercules, Achilles, Odysseus, Perseus, Cronus, Prometheus.
Who are the twelve Olympian gods?
The canonical Twelve Olympians are the major deities who resided on Mount Olympus: Zeus (sky, thunder), Hera (marriage), Poseidon (sea), Demeter (harvest), Athena (wisdom), Apollo (sun, music), Artemis (hunt, moon), Ares (war), Aphrodite (love), Hephaestus (fire, forge), Hermes (messenger), and Dionysus (wine). Some classical sources list Hestia (hearth) in place of Dionysus, as Hestia was an older Olympian who reportedly gave her seat to Dionysus.
Is Hades an Olympian god?
Hades is a son of Cronus and brother of Zeus and Poseidon, making him a deity of the same generation as the Olympians. However, he is typically excluded from the canonical twelve because he resides in the underworld rather than on Mount Olympus. When Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades divided the cosmos, Zeus took the sky, Poseidon took the sea, and Hades took the underworld. Despite his exclusion from the Olympian twelve, Hades is as powerful as his brothers — he just governs different territory.
What is the difference between Ares and Athena in warfare?
Both Ares and Athena are associated with war but represent completely different aspects. Ares is the god of brutal, bloodthirsty warfare — the violence and chaos of battle itself. He is impulsive, physically powerful, and not particularly well-liked by the other Olympians. Athena is the goddess of strategic warfare, wisdom, and military planning. She represents the intellectual and tactical dimensions of conflict. In most Greek myths, Athena is favored over Ares and defeats him in direct combat. The Athenians named their city after Athena rather than Ares for this reason.
Can I add more Greek figures to the wheel?
Yes. Launch the full wheel and add: Pan (wilderness), Hecate (magic), Nike (victory), Nemesis (retribution), Tyche (fortune), Iris (rainbow), the nine Muses (Calliope, Clio, etc.), the three Fates (Clotho, Lachesis, Atropos), Medusa, Theseus, Jason, Orpheus, Narcissus, Icarus, Midas, or any deity from the extended Greek pantheon. The wheel accepts unlimited entries.
