What comes back in the chat

This is the same wheel the plugin shows in ChatGPT, where it follows ChatGPT's light or dark look. The buttons call the real NameWheel server, and the wheel draws its real answer.

Up to 30 demo calls a minute from your address. Spins and teams are worked out on the server and the names are not stored.

Tools

What the plugin can do

ChatGPT reads these descriptions and picks the tool. You never type the tool names, and all eight work once your free account is connected.

You sayNameWheel does
"Pick someone from this list"spin_wheel picks one or more winners with a cryptographic random number generator and spins the wheel in the chat.
"Split us into 3 teams"make_teams makes random teams, or groups of a set size, shown as cards.
"Give me a wheel to project"open_wheel_link makes a namewheel.org link with the names already on the wheel.
"Is this draw genuine?"verify_draw recomputes a certified draw and checks the sealed commitment and NameWheel's Ed25519 signature.
"What can you do here?"check_plan gives the limits for this connection and the certified draws left today.
"Run a draw people can check"certified_draw runs a TrueSpin draw sealed before the spin and publishes it on a permanent proof page.
"Lock this list before the draw"freeze_list freezes the entry list in public at namewheel.org/f/CODE.
"Show my draws"my_draws lists your certified draws and frozen lists with their proof links.
Why a plugin

Why not just ask ChatGPT to pick?

A chatbot can name a winner, but a language model is not a random number generator, and nobody can check its pick afterwards.

Language models have favourites

In a 2024 study, GPT-4 and Llama 3 leaned towards heads when asked to flip coins and avoided long runs the way people do.1 Asked for a number from 1 to 100, one test found GPT-3.5 Turbo kept choosing 47.2

Nobody can check a chat pick

Ask again and you get a new answer. There is no record of what was drawn, from which list, or how many times someone asked before sharing the result.

NameWheel does the drawing

ChatGPT only passes the names. NameWheel's server picks with Node.js crypto.randomInt,3 so every name has the same chance. A certified draw goes further: sealed, signed and public.

Fixes

If something does not work

ChatGPT answered in text and showed no wheel

Name the plugin in your message: "Use NameWheel to pick…". ChatGPT decides when to call a plugin, and naming it removes the guesswork.

The connect page did not accept my key

Copy the whole key, starting with nw_live_. A key is shown only once, and a deleted key stops working at once. If in doubt, make a new one on this page.

ChatGPT asks me to connect NameWheel

That is the normal first step when you add the plugin. The NameWheel page asks for your key once: sign in free, make the key on this page, paste it and press Connect.

The winner changes every time I ask

Every spin is a new random pick. For a result other people need to trust, ask for a certified draw: it is sealed before the spin and every draw on the same list shows on its proof page.

I don't want the names to be public

Use a normal spin. Only certified draws publish their names, on purpose, so anyone can check them. Names in spins and teams are not stored.

I want to disconnect

Delete the key in your dashboard under Settings and ChatGPT loses access to your account the same moment. You can also remove the plugin inside ChatGPT.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Is the NameWheel plugin for ChatGPT free?
Yes. It works with a free NameWheel account: sign up with an email code or Google, no card. Spins, teams, wheel links, draw checks and up to 20 certified draws a day are all included.
Does ChatGPT choose the winner?
No. ChatGPT passes the names to NameWheel, and NameWheel's server picks the winner with Node.js crypto.randomInt, a cryptographically secure random number generator. The wheel in the chat shows the server's answer.
Do I need a NameWheel account?
Yes, a free one. When you add the plugin, ChatGPT asks you to connect NameWheel and a NameWheel page asks for your key. Sign up and make the key on this page in one press. The wheel on namewheel.org itself works without an account.
Are my names stored?
Names in spins and teams are worked out on the server and not stored; request logs keep the tool, the number of entries and the caller's address for 30 days, never the names. Certified draws are published on their proof page permanently, by design.
What can the key do?
It lets ChatGPT use the NameWheel tools for you: spins, teams, wheel links, draw checks, certified draws, frozen lists and your draw history. It cannot change your account, your payments or your data.
How do I disconnect?
Delete the key in your NameWheel dashboard under Settings. ChatGPT loses access to your account the same moment. You can also remove the plugin inside ChatGPT.
Is it the same as the NameWheel MCP server?
Yes. The plugin connects ChatGPT to the same NameWheel server at https://mcp.namewheel.org/mcp, which also works in Claude, Cursor, VS Code and other assistants. The NameWheel MCP page has the setup for each one.
Who makes the plugin?
NameWheel, run by Outline Technologies LLC. The plugin's server is open source under the MIT licence at github.com/namewheel/mcp. NameWheel is not affiliated with OpenAI.
